Eski Uygur Türkçesinde Yükümlülük Kipliği: Güçlü/Zayıf Zorunluluk, Gereklilik, İzin, Emir

Abstract

This study aims to examine the manifestations of deontic modality within the framework of modality in Old Uyghur Turkish. Deontic modality is analyzed in terms of its subcategories, namely obligation, necessity, permission, and imperative. The theoretical framework of the study is based on F. R. Palmer’s classification of deontic modality. The distinction between obligation and necessity follows the approach proposed by van der Auwera and Plungian, while the gradation of obligation is interpreted in line with the strong–weak distinction suggested by Bybee et al. For the analysis of modal markers, a pragmatic approach is adopted, and modal meanings are evaluated within their contextual usage. In this study, eleven works written in Old Uyghur Turkish were examined. Modal markers identified in these texts were examined through document analysis within the framework of qualitative research methods, and the data were analyzed using categorical descriptive analysis. The findings reveal that deontic modality in Old Uyghur Turkish is not expressed through a single linguistic device but rather through a multilayered and functionally diverse system.
